Overview

About this product

Granitic sand is decomposed granite, a gravelly sand whose clay fraction binds under compaction into a firm, hard-wearing natural surface. It’s the material behind Victoria’s golden gravel paths, from botanic gardens to rail trails, and a council-spec staple for shared paths.

It lays like a sand, then behaves like a pavement. Spread it over a prepared base, wet it and roll it, and the fines lock the coarser grains into a surface that sheds foot and bike traffic while still looking like ground, not asphalt.

For higher traffic or steeper grades we supply it cement stabilised, typically 2% to 3%, for added durability and washout resistance. The finish stays natural; the surface just holds on longer.

How much do you need?

Compacted granitic sand weighs around 1.6 tonnes per cubic metre. Multiply your area by the layer depth in metres for the volume, then by the density, and add about 10 percent for compaction. Tell us the area and depth on the quote form and we will work out the tonnes.

Worked example

80 m² path × 0.09 m deep = 7.2 m³ × ~1.6 t/m³ + 10%

Good to know

Common questions

How deep should granitic sand be laid?
For paths, 75mm to 100mm compacted over a prepared base is typical. Driveways want 100mm or more over a compacted road base layer. Lay it slightly proud, wet it and roll or plate it down to a firm finish.
What is the difference between granitic sand and crusher dust?
Both compact firm, but granitic sand is decomposed granite with a natural golden colour and a clay fraction that binds into a hard weathered-look surface. Crusher dust is grey crushed rock fines, cheaper and usually used as bedding rather than a finished surface.
Should I get it cement stabilised?
For high traffic, steep grades or areas that cop water, yes. A 2% to 3% cement stabilised mix holds together much better against washout and wear, while keeping the natural finish. For flat garden paths, plain granitic sand compacted properly is usually enough.
How is it delivered, and can I track it?
Supplied loose by the tonne and delivered by tipper across Melbourne and Victoria, sized to your site access. Every load is GPS-tracked in NXT Control so you can see it from the yard to your gate.
